Why Does Spotify Keep Pausing? How to fix it?

Spotify is a great way to enjoy your favorite songs and podcasts. It remains the No. 1 streaming audio service with a sizable lead over Apple, Amazon and YouTube Music in reported paid subscribers. But the app occasionally misbehaves. This includes the vexing problem when Spotify pauses and stops playing music.

So, why does Spotify keep pausing and what can you do to fix this problem? In this article, we will present 7 proven solutions to fix this problem. Follow these tips and you'll be enjoying smooth audio in no time.

1. Slow internet connection

Make sure your device is connected to a stable internet connection. You can check that by loading web pages in a browser. General troubleshooting tips:

  1. Restart your device. It might sound simple, but sometimes that's all it takes to fix a bad connection.
  2. If restarting doesn't work, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data:
    • Open your Settings app and tap Network & internet or Connections. Depending on your device, these options may be different.
    • Turn Wi-Fi off and mobile data on, and check if there's a difference.
    • If not, turn mobile data off and Wi-Fi on and check again.

2. Spotify is played on another device

You can sign in to your Spotify account on as many devices as you like, but music can only be played on one device at a time. If music is played on another device, it'll pause any other device currently playing. If you don’t remember using your Spotify account anywhere else. Go to your account page, click "SIGN OUT EVERYWHERE" and change your password. If it stops, it looks like someone's got into your account, but you just stopped them!

3. Low power mode is activated

If you have an iPhone, you’re probably familiar with Low Power Mode, an option you can set so the device preserves battery life. Spotify pauses may occur if you use low power mode. If your mobile device is running low on power, it may enable low power mode (or battery saver mode). This is a great way to save power, but it may interrupt your Spotify app's music streaming. To turn off low power mode, simply follow these steps.

iOS

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Scroll to ‘Battery’ and tap on it
  3. Toggle off ‘Low Power Mode’

Android

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Select ‘Battery and Device Care’
  3. Tap ‘Battery’
  4. Toggle off ‘Power Saving’

4. Data saver mode is enabled

Data Saver reduces the app’s data usage by showing fewer images and reducing audio quality. However, it may also cause Spotify pausing. Turning off data saver mode is easy, just follow these steps, and it will be the same on both iOS and Android:

  1. Open Spotify and tap the ‘Settings’ cog
  2. Tap on ‘Data Saver’
  3. You’ll see on the next screen if it is toggled on. Simply turn it off if so!

5. Clear Spotify Cache

Spotify stores parts of music and podcasts as cache, so it can play without stuttering, but it can get too big. To fix common issues, you can clear Spotify cache.

On Android

  1. Open the Spotify app.
  2. Tap Home - Settings (the gear icon on the top right corner).
  3. Tap Delete cache under Storage.

On iPhone

  1. Open the Spotify app.
  2. Tap Home - Settings(the gear icon on the top right corner).
  3. Tap Storage.
  4. Tap Delete cache.

6. Too many apps running

There are sometimes too many processes running in the background. You can see the apps you have running in the background by tapping the square Overview navigation icon at the lower-right corner of your Android display. They may consume more battery power, CPU, or memory, so you’d better stop them.

7. Check your headphones

It's worth checking if the pause problem originates from your headphones. If you're using wired headphones and the connection is loose, it could cause Spotify to pause if your device thinks the jack isn't fully connected. Play sounds from another app and check if you can hear that.

Spotify pausing issues usually happen when you are streaming music. If above methods don’t work, you may download music from Spotify and play offline, however, this requires a Premium account. To download music directly from Spotify, just follow these instructions.

  1. Make sure you are connected to the internet and open Spotify
  2. Search and locate the album that you want to download
  3. Hit the circle within an arrow icon to start the download

If the problem persists on both streaming and offline playback, you may download Spotify to MP3 and play them with another music player on any device.

8. Spotify pause with Discord

If you are transmitting with your mic in voice chat for 30 seconds while Spotify is playing, Spotify will stop playing. This autopause error may also appear when using the following features with Spotify:
- Voice Chat
- Screenshare
- Go Live

To avoid this try using Push-To-Talk or adjusting your voice activity sensitivity so that your mic is not activating while you listen.
